1) Change Log

Changes from version 0.4 to 0.5

  1. Support of Garmin devices (serial and USB), import and export of waypoints, routes and tracks.
  2. Added dialog for GPS device import.
  3. Added view for displaying properties of tracks, routes and waypoints.

2) System Requirements

  2. Java Virtual Machine (JVM) 1.6 (Java 6) or later must be is installed on your computer. You can download the Java Virtual Machine from Oracle.

3) Installation Instructions

The Pace & Place installation is performed by an interactive installer.


  1. Download the Pace & Place Windows distribution.
  2. Double-click the downloaded executable.
  3. Follow the steps of the interactive installer.
  4. Launch Pace & Place by navigating to: Start -> Programs -> -> Pace & Place


  1. Download the Pace & Place Linux distribution.
  2. Right-click on the JAR file and select Open with... Java/JDK. If this option is not available, launch the installer from the command line: java -jar pace_and_place_X.X_buildXXX_linux32.jar
  3. Follow the steps of the interactive installer.
  4. Due to a bug, the executable file pace_and_place has to be set as executable:
    1. Open a system console.
    2. Change to the installation directory: cd <Pace & Place installation directory>
    3. Set start file as executable: chmod u+x pace_and_place
  5. Launch Pace & Place: ./pace_and_place
  6. You may optionally create a desktop shortcut (depending on your Linux distribution).

4) Uninstall Instructions


To remove or uninstall Pace & Place under Microsoft Windows...
  1. Launch Start -> Programs -> -> Uninstaller
  2. Check the box if you want to remove the directory completely.
  3. Select "Uninstall" in order to remove Pace & Place.


To remove or uninstall Pace & Place under Linux...
  1. Open a system console.
  2. Change to the uninstaller directory inside the installation directory: cd <Pace & Place installation directory>/Uninstaller
  3. Launch the uninstaller: java -jar uninstaller.jar
  4. Check the box if you want to remove the directory completely.
  5. Select "Uninstall" in order to remove Pace & Place.

6) How to report a bug

At the moment there is no automated way to submit a bug. Please follow this short guideline instead:
  1. Close the application, if possible.
  2. Windows: Open the "Windows Explorer" and navigate to your personal folder. Inside this folder you´ll find the application folder.
  3. Linux: Open a console window and navigate to the application folder inside your home folder: ~/.pace_and_place/
  4. Create an archive file of the folder "log" called "" or "log.tar.gz".

  6. We strongly recommend that you log in first. If you don´t have a SourceForge account yet, please create one.
  7. Add a new tracker item. Please select the correct application version (Group) und operating system (Category). Specify a meaningful summary and add a good description of the problem (Details).
  8. Attach the archive containing the log files and press "Add Artifact".
